Tuesday, September 8, 1987 The Paducah Sun A5 Released back in By KENNETH JAUTZ Associated Press Writer BONN, West Germany Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher today thanked Iran and Syria for helping to obtain the freedom of West German hostage Alfred Schmidt. Ministry spokesman Michael Gerdts said Genscher sent a telex to the foreign ministers of Syria and Iran "personally thanking them, Syrian leader Hafez Assad and Iranian Parliamentary leader Hashemi Rafsanjani for their help in gaining Schmidt's release." Genscher asked both countries to continue efforts to free West German businessman Rudolf Cordes, 53, also seized in Lebanon in January. Schmidt, 7, was freed by his captors Monday in Beirut after more than seven months in captivity. He flew home to West Germany this morning. He is an employee of the Munich-.

based Siemens electronics company. Company spokesman Horst Siebert said Schmidt was undergoing medical examinations at an undisclosed location today. Siebert said West German government officials would interview Schmidt in hopes of learning more about the fate of Cordes. In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Siebert repeated that the company had not paid ransom to gain Schmidt's release. West German television reported Schmidt planned to travel to West.

Berlin later today to visit his mother. The Holy Warriors for Freedom, the Shiite Moslem group that kidnapped the two West Germans, demanded the release of two Lebanese brothers imprisoned in Frankfurt. West German officials said no deal was made with the group. West German officials did not elaborate on the role of Syria and Iran in the release of Schmidt. Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon, and maintains 25,000 troops in the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Schmidt was driven by Syrian army officers to the West German ambassador's residence in Damascus on Monday. Man charged with DUI after motorcycle wreck DRAFFENVILLE, Ky. Mike H. Silkwood, 22, Grand Rivers Rt. 1, was jailed for DUI after he wrecked his motorcycle on U.S. 641, three miles north of here.

Marshall Deputy Sheriff Andy Sedlock said Silkwood was thrown about 30 feet from the motorcycle when it left the right side of the road and ran down an embankment about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Silkwood was treated and released at Marshall County Hospital, Sedlock said. Technology programs reaccredited at WKU BOWLING GREEN, Ky. Alexander Prechtel, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office, said Monday, There were never any negotiations to release the two (Hamadis) and there are no plans to do so." The West German government in June turned down a U.S.

request to extradite Hamadi, and said he would be tried in Frankfurt. Officials said they did not know why the kidnappers chose to release Schmidt and not Cordes. Schmidt is the third hostage to gain freedom recently. American journalist Charles Glass arrived at Beirut's Summerland Hotel on Aug. 18 after two months of captivity and said he escaped from his Shiite guards in south Beirut.

Syria said it pressured his captors to release him. Deaths Benjamin Davis SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. Benjamin F. Davis, 79, of South Fulton Rt. 2, died Monday night at Haws Memorial Nursing Home.

Mr. Davis was a retired farmer and livestock dealer. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Omar Davis; a son, Felix Davis, and a grandson, Dave Davis, both of South Fulton. A brother, Bud Davis, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hornbeak Funeral Home in Fulton, with the Rev. Paul Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Obion County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m.

Mr. Henson was a retired employee of Kenlake State Park and was a member of Pleasant Hope Baptist Church. He leaves a daughter, Pearlene Fulks of Benton; a sister, Elizabeth Henson of Benton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Lorene Henson, preceded him in death on Aug. 17.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Collier Funeral Home here, with the Rev. Richard West and the Rev. Ernest Cox officiating. Burial will be in Price Cemetery.

today at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. Mr. Collie leaves his wife, Magdalene Dowdy Collie, and a daughter, Clara Edmonds of Fulton. He was a member of Cherry Corner Baptist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m.

William McDavid SMITHLAND, Ky. William K. McDavid, 76, of Smithland, died at ELSIE HUNT Elsie Hunt Elsie Hunt, 86, of 642 N. 23rd died at 12:32 p.m. Monday at Superior Care Nursing Home.

Mrs. Hunt, a Wickliffe native, had lived many years in Paducah, where she owned several apartment buildings. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Western Baptist Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years. She was a duch*ess of Paducah and a daughter of the late T.J. and Betty Allen Haynes.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Bryant of Paducah, and Betty Dixon of Wickliffe; two stepsons, Dr. J.M. Hunt and George Hunt, both of Wickliffe; eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. Two sons, Lindy Dunn and Commie Dunn preceded her i in death. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Wednesday at Roth Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Kersey and Dr. J. Robert White officiating. Burial will be in North Ballard Baptist Church Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today. Gust Pakitsos Gust Pakitsos, 91, of Saxony Mobile Home Park, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lourdes Hospital. Mr.

Pakitsos was a native of Greece and a former resident of Chicago. He was a retired chef and a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Adelaide Pakitsos; two daughters, Helen Merges of Paducah, and Angeline Berry of Chicago; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The body will be taken to Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst, where funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Robert White officiating. Surviving are his mother, Olga McDavid of Kenosha, his wife, Sara McDavid of Smithland; a son, William K. McDavid Jr. of Jackson Hole, a daughter, Sandra Cannon Prostak of Malibu, a brother, Gen. John A.
