Depts. The Real World“Life moves pretty fast,” Ferris Bueller famously said. “If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” I thought of that quote in early October as I was trying to make sense of the news coming out of Washington, D.C.: There were President Donald Trump’s tweets taunting the leader of North Korea. There was the botched response to the humanitarian disaster in Puerto Rico. There was the rollback in birth control coverage for women. And there was the president’s war of words with Republican Senator Bob Corker. By the time you read this, there surely will be more sensational headlines, more meshuggaas. And yet, Americans knew this was coming with Trump (a recent headline in the New York Times read: “For Trump, the Reality…4 min
Depts.Behind The StoriesJOSH COCHRANIllustratorThe dense, colorful images that flow from Josh Cochran’s hand channel the frenetic activity you might find in Where’s Waldo? books. That chaotic style was a good fit for this issue’s story about the state of the local cannabis scene five years after legalization (“Budding Industry,” page 110). The illustrator, based in Brooklyn, New York, set to work creating what he dubbed a “surreal marijuana fantasy land that still resembled Denver.” One of Cochran’s reference points was Disneyland maps he grew up looking at as a kid in Southern California. “They held a certain amount of intrigue and whimsy that I try to recreate in my pieces,” Cochran says. His work has also been featured in the New York Times and GQ.MORGAN RACHEL LEVYPhotographerCarrying heavy camera gear and lighting…3 min
Depts.Odds Are…So far, Colorado’s 2018 gubernatorial race has been full of firsts: More candidates than ever have entered the race (26 at press time), and political forecasters suggest that, by Election Day, campaign spending will reach a new state record. We calculated a few figures ourselves and considered the likelihoods that each of these eight candidates, who have the best chances of winning in our eyes, will become the Centennial State’s next governor. From top: Blaine Harrington III/Alamy Stock Photo; Courtesy of the United States House Office of Photography; Matt Nager; Courtesy of Lynne For Colorado; Courtesy of Doug for Colorado; Courtesy of Wikipedia; Courtesy of Mike Campbell/Spotlight Photography; Courtesy of Cary Kennedy; Courtesy of Greg Lopez…1 min
Depts.Home Team1 GABRIEL LANDESKOGHOMETOWN: Stockholm, SwedenPOSITION: Forward (left wing)TASTE OF HOME: The closest thing to a Scandinavian meal Landy has found is at IKEA in Centennial. Seriously: The Swedish retailer serves those famous meatballs as well as a traditional “julbord” (a Christmas smorgasbord with ham, Swedish rice pudding, and more) around the holidays.TOURIST FOR A DAY: Visiting Stockholm? Landeskog likes the cobblestone streets of the Gamla Stan area, or Old Town, which is home to the Royal Palace, the medieval Riddarholmen Church, and numerous restaurants.2 SEMYON VARLAMOVHOMETOWN: Samara, RussiaPOSITION: GoalieTASTE OF HOME: Varlamov swears by the pierogies and “pelmeni” (Russian dumplings) at Red Square Bistro in downtown’s Larimer Square.TOURIST FOR A DAY: Stop about 650 miles west of Varlamov’s hometown, in Moscow, where “you never get bored,” he says.
